Trans Tasman Under 15 Shield Series

The Trans Tasman Under 15 Shield Series celebrates its 25th year today when the two take on the first games in the 2012 series at West Wave Thursday morning. The NZ team coaches are Emily Cox (Coach of the NZ Girls) and Alex McKenzie (Coach of the NZ boys). Alex McKenzie will remember the series as he also played in it when he was Under 15. Mr. Michael Hart our visiting Australian referee and referee at the Beijing Olympics 4 years ago also remembers the early days as he regularly brought teams across the Tasman in the 1980s.

The Shield was officially started in 1988 and has been played regularly in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch over those 25 years. NZ has dominated the boys series for most of the 25 years but the girls was more evenly spread between the two, although NZ has held the ascendency in recent years. The series has been a highlight of a budding young player’s dream and offers them their first taste of International Water Polo.

The first games are Thursday at West Wave at 11.30am (girls) and 12.45pm (boys) and again Thursday evening at West Wave with the girls at 6.30pm and the boys at 7.45pm. The series shifts to Diocesan Pool on Friday with the girls at 9.15am and the Boys at 10.45pm.

Admission is $2 each or $5 a family of 2 Adults and 2 Children.
